Living in the moment
This great experiment. O how I marvel
at it, especially in these moments as I
lay in the sweet embrace of all that is.
This life is truly magnificent filled with all
its dualistic pulls and pushes; we are in truth
treading across stepping-stones of Grace.
When we see through our hearts, nothing
changes yet everything does. The most supposed
insignificant or inconsequential moment
is as precious as the most important. There is
no real difference because God.s presence
floods through it all. Who can pass judgment
when this is witnessed? Not with the heart's eye
anyway.
Some people, many, may not feel this
way.see as I do. But, no matter which way I
turn it to get a closer look.nothing but the
awesome splendour of the precious presence is
revealed. To me, this life we are all so immersed
in screams with intense beauty and purpose.
When I don't see this it simply means that I
am not seeing through my heart. It's a good reminder
to get back to basics, to simply stop,
close my eyes, take a deep breath and open up to
all that is once again. All that is, just as it is.
You know, life is not really very complicated.
If we seek out a simple approach life's simplicity
is quickly revealed. It's simply a matter of how
willing we are to surrender all the limiting ideas
and beliefs that stand between what we want life
to be and what is, just as it is.
This great experiment, this life, is too precious,
too fleeting to be taken for granted, to be
lost in unconscious, reactive and habitual living.
For me anyway, a sunrise today is not to be
missed, I won't see today's sunrise any other day.
And an opportunity to see a little clearer or to
be moved a little deeper is not to be passed up.
I don't know about enlightenment but I do
know about enlightened living. To me, it's simple. Find a way to live with yourself and others
in peace and happiness, not just now and again
when we happen to stumble across it but,
daily. Moment to moment. This enlightened
living is not so much what you know and do,
but how you go about it.
It's simple: Look for
the Divine in your moments of self-remembering
and the Divine is here.
As Mother Teresa did her daily rounds in the
Kalighat Hospice in Calcutta she would visit
those preparing for their last few steps across
the Stepping Stones of Grace. "Bhogobaan
ekane acche", she would whisper in Bengali as
she made her way from bed to bed. "God is here".
She would make every place she visited God's
Place. By her simple yet profound acknowledgement
that "God is here". Sanctifying how
and where we live is not difficult or complicated.
We don't need to travel to far away holy
sites to get a sense of the Divine. All it takes is to
translate that very human yearning that we all
carry within our hearts and look through it. No
matter what it is we are witnessing, if we simply
stop to look through it, our hearts will reveal the
sacred sanctuary of this moment.
On my desk, right next to the telephone I
have placed a reminder by Thich Nhat Hanh
that for me acts as a window into the truth of
this moment, every moment. I read it often, especially
during a difficult day after speaking
with people, listening to their stories and struggles,
their challenges with their own life experiment.
I read the following short passage and it
never fails to refresh and reawaken me to the
truth that we are all on this sacred journey,
treading the stepping-stones of Grace.
"Every time you return from distraction into
deep awareness of your breath, you are in touch
with full consciousness. You are a living Buddha.
It only takes one experience of living in full
consciousness to see that awakening is possible
for you. You, too, can realize your true nature if
you take the trouble to practice. When you find yourself at a loss, simply return
to your breath. Breathe in consciously,
breathe out consciously. Take refuge in full consciousness.
Whenever you feel anger, fear, agitation,
whenever you feel lost, this refuge is always
here, waiting for you. Full consciousness is
our blessed isle. It is totally reliable. In times of
loss, instability, or danger, you can always return
to this blessed isle, to your true nature".
This issue’s theme is Living in the Moment.
We hope you enjoy it.
